How to take care of your tattoo: advice from the artist

Getting a tattoo is an exciting and meaningful experience—art etched into your skin, meant to last a lifetime. But the process doesn’t end once you leave the studio. In fact, proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals correctly and retains its color, clarity, and detail.

At Inktention Tattoo, I treat every piece as a collaboration between artist and client. That’s why I want to share professional advice based on over a decade of experience to help you take care of your tattoo the right way.

Follow Your Artist’s Instructions

Every tattoo artist has their own technique and preferred healing method. I always provide specific aftercare instructions once your session is complete. Follow those guidelines carefully, and avoid replacing them with information found online or on social media.

The First Cleaning Matters

After removing the protective film (as directed), wash your hands thoroughly, then gently clean the tattooed area using lukewarm water and a fragrance-free, neutral soap. Do not scrub. Pat dry using a clean paper towel or soft cloth—never rub the skin.

Moisturize Lightly

Use a professional tattoo aftercare product or a healing ointment I recommend. Apply a very thin layer—just enough to keep the skin hydrated. Over-applying can suffocate the skin and delay healing. If it looks shiny, you’ve likely used too much.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

UV rays can cause fading, distortion, and irritation. For at least the first three weeks, avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds. After healing, always apply high-SPF sunscreen to protect your tattoo and preserve its vibrancy.

No Swimming, Soaking, or Steam

Do not submerge your tattoo in water—this includes pools, bathtubs, hot tubs, oceans, or saunas. Showering is fine, but keep it quick and avoid hot water. Moisture and bacteria can compromise healing and increase the risk of infection.

Do Not Scratch or Peel

As your tattoo heals, it may itch or begin to flake. This is normal. Do not scratch or pick at it. Removing scabs or peeling skin can damage the tattoo and cause areas to lose ink or scar.

Monitor for Unusual Reactions

If you notice excessive redness, swelling, pus, or prolonged pain, contact me or a healthcare professional. It’s always better to be cautious—early attention prevents complications.

Final Thoughts

A well-cared-for tattoo reflects the same respect you showed when choosing the design. At Inktention Tattoo, I approach every tattoo with care, precision, and professionalism. But the lasting beauty of the piece depends on how you treat it afterward.

If you have any questions about your healing process or are planning your next tattoo, feel free to reach out. I’m here to help.
